Counter Surfing And Garbage Raiding

Counter surfing and garbage raiding can be common issues for curious dogs. With food being so enticing, it’s important to address these behaviors to keep your living space organized and safe.

Understanding Counter Surfing Behavior

Dogs are naturally curious and can get into mischief, especially when it comes to food. They often learn that tasty treats might be available on counters or in garbage cans, making it likely they’ll look there again. Even small dogs can find ways to reach new heights in their quest for food.

Prevention Strategies

The best way to prevent counter surfing is to ensure your dog never experiences the rewards of food scavenging. Keep foods securely stored in containers or out of reach. Ensure trash cans have lids that your dog cannot open, or place them in closed cupboards. For persistent dogs, consider feeding several small meals a day to help them feel satisfied.

Training Techniques

Instill the behavior of staying off counters by immediately and consistently reacting to any unauthorized exploration. A firm “Off!” paired with removing your dog from the area reinforces boundaries. Ensure your dog gets plenty of physical and mental exercise to prevent boredom-driven mischief.

Environmental Deterrents

For dogs who surf when you’re not around, use safe deterrents. A pop-can pyramid or a Snappy Trainer can startle your dog without causing harm, teaching them that these areas aren’t safe to raid.

Set Up Deterrents

Balance lightweight items like cookie sheets on edges, so they clatter if dislodged, teaching the dog to avoid tables and counters.

What Not to Do

Avoid scolding your dog after they have already stolen food; it won’t make sense to them after the fact. Never shoo or physically force your dog off a surface, as they might get hurt. Instead, guide them calmly and remove temptation. Avoid using harsh deterrents that could frighten a skittish dog too severely.

Every Dog Is Different

The right approach depends on why your dog does this — and that varies by temperament, history, and environment. The Synchrony coach can tailor these principles to your dog's specific behavior profile.
